Anjana was born on 12 June in a middle-class family in Ranchi, the capital of the state of Jharkhand in India. She basically comes from a Bhumihar Brahmin Family. Initially, she wanted to become a doctor and took several pre-medical entrance exams after completing her schooling. Thereafter, Anjana decided to pursue honours in Botany as she could not clear the medical examination.

She also tried to clear some UPSC exams but failed. Then, she decided to become a journalist and did her graduation in journalism from Jamia Millia Islamia. After graduation, she was assigned to an investigation show, Aakhon Dekhi, in Doordarshan. Anjana started her career by working as a counselor in the South Korean company Daewoo Motors.

But she resigned a year later and joined an NGO as a counselor. Then, she chose to go for graduation in journalism from Jamia Millia Islamia. But after 1 year of working in Doordarshan, Anjana joined Zee News. She wanted to become an anchor from the beginning. But news channels did not consider her adequate for the position due to her lack of speaking skills.
