Michael W. Smith is an American musician known for his significant influence on the genre of Christian rock. His father was a former minor league baseball player and worker at the Ashland Oil Refinery and his mother was a caterer. At an early age, Michael learned to play piano and sang in his church choir. At the age of ten, Michael had an intense religious experience that led him to Bible study and becoming a devout Christian.

After graduating high school, Michael became involved with drugs and alcohol and although he attended Marshall University; he dropped out after just one semester. Michael was able to recommit to Christianity and signed on as a keyboardist for the group Higher Ground. They currently reside in Nashville and attend Belmont Church.
